Act Four Plot

Scene 1
Summary: Octavius, Lepidus, and Antony are making a death list. Antony tells Lepidus to go to Caesars house and get his (Caesar's) will. Then if things start to go bad, Antony and Octavius will blame everything on Lepidus.

Conflict: They need to get the will so they can change it so certain people can receive more of his belongings and they don't want to get caught doing it. This is why Octavius and Antony will put the blame on Lepidus if it doesn't go according to plan.

Scene 2
Summary: Brutus's and Cassius's armies meet up. They then start to argue in front of their armies. Then they both decide that it would be better to go into the tent and discuss their feelings of anger in there, because they didn't think that it was right to have their armies watch nobles argue.

Conflict: Right now they don't want to argue in front of their armies.

Scene 3
Summary: Brutus and Cassius start to argue about their sides, and they eventually get them resolved. They then discuss what they're going to do next. Cassius wants to keep his army there and wait for the enemy to come to them. Brutus disagrees and thinks that they should march to Philippi. Cassius then agrees to whatever he says. At the end of this scene, Brutus gets visited by the Ghost of Caesar. The ghost tells him that they will meet up at Philippi (this was all he said).

Conflict: Brutus and Cassius are arguing about what and why they wronged each other. They eventually understand each other and become friends again. There also was the argument on whether they should stay or leave for Philippi. Now that the ghost had visited Brutus, he will probably find a problem whether this is a good sign or a bad sign.

Outcome of Act Four:
Brutus and Cassius solved their disagreements and now are planning to go attack Antony and Octavius.

Character Quotes
Antony- " -And though we lay these honors on this man,
To ease ourselves of the divers sland'rous loads,
He shall but bear them as the donkey bears gold,
to groan and sweat under the business, -"
Interpretation= He talks about Lepidus to Octavius. He is saying that even though Lepidus will hold power with them he will be easily manipulated and can take the burden and blame for the less popular decisions and jobs brought by being in power. He refers to him as being a donkey, burdened to to carry gold and be directed where to go.

Characters for Act IV- Scene 3

Main Characters
*Brutus- one of the main characters, one of Caesar's murderers
- He is arguing with Cassius. He is actually purposely making him mad.
- After he is done arguing with Cassius he actually admits he was just as ill-tempered as Cassius was because of grief. His wife Portia has just died and he is sick with grief.
- During their discussion on what strategy they should use he argues his point of going immediately to Philippi so they can take the enemy head-on.
- As everyone is falling asleep a ghost comes to him, telling him they will meet in Philippi

*Cassius- one of the main characters, one of Caesar's murderers
- He is furious with Brutus for punishing a man for taking bribes, even after Cassius wrote letters to try and help Lucius Pella (the one caught taking bribes).
- Cassius becomes angrier and angrier as Brutus taunts and makes fun of him. He eventually overs his dagger to Brutus telling him to just kill him on the spot to end the torment. Brutus however doesn't.
- They make amends with each other and settle down. Cassius then learns of Brutus's loss and grieves with him over Portia's death.
- He debates with Brutus about what they should do with their armies. Cassius is of the opinion that they should stay were they are and make the enemy come to them, however Brutus argues his point of attacking as soon as possible and Cassius gives in to Brutus's argument, agreeing with him.
- He leaves to go to bed and rest for tomorrow.

Other Characters
*Lucius
*Titinus
*Poet
*Lucilius
*Messala

Character Quotes
Brutus- " -By the gods,
You shall digest the venom of you spleen,
Though it do split you; for, from this day forth,
I'll use you for my mirth, yea, for my laughter,
When you are waspish."
Interpretation= Brutus is saying that he does not have to tolerate Cassius when is angry, raging, and unreasonable. He is telling him that he is not afraid of him or making him mad.

Brutus- " -Speak to me what thou art."
Ghost- "Thy evil spirit, Brutus."
Brutus- "Why com'st thou?"
Ghost- "To tell thee thou shalt see me at Philippi."
Brutus- "Well; then I shall see thee again?"
Ghost- "Ay, at Philippi."
Brutus- "Why, I will see thee at Philippi then. -"
Interpretation= Brutus is talking to what appears to be the ghost of Caesar. However the spirit himself says he is "the evil spirit of Brutus." He also states that they will meet at Philippi, which means that either Brutus will meet with the ghost itself again, or he will "meet" with his evil spirit. Another thing important about the interaction is that no one else sees the ghost except for Brutus.
- My personal interpretation of their conversation is that a significant event is going to happen at Philippi that involves Brutus not behaving like his normal self.
